RISLEY PARK TRADITIONAL JAZZ CLUB

The Risley Park Traditional Jazz Club starts its programme for 2012 on Wednesday February 1st with a performance by the Savannah Jazz Band, Yorkshires premier traditional style band. The club which is now in its 15th year, will then continue to present different bands from around the UK and Europe, once every fortnight throughout the year.

Risley Park Jazz Club is a well attended and friendly club organised and hosted by Ken Godfrey. It plays host to high quality jazz bands, usually six or seven piece, fortnightly on Wednesday evenings at the Risley Park pub/restaurant, situated on Derby Road, Risley, DE72 3SS near junction 25 of the M1 motorway.

The jazz sessions are held in the comfortable ground floor function room with its own dedicated bar. A free supper is provided during the evening. Admission is usually £8, payable on entry. Everyone is welcome and membership is not necessary. There is ample free parking. Doors open from 7pm and the live music starts at 8.30pm finishing at 11pm. For more information visit

BOY PUSHED INTO CANAL

Police are appealing for information after a teenager was shoved into a canal. The 13-year-old boy was cycling along the Erewash Canal tow path at Lock Lane, Sandiacre, at around 2.15pm on Sunday, January 8th. A dog ran out in front of him, causing him to swerve. A man then approached him, was verbally abusive and pushed him in the chest, causing him and his bike to fall into the water.

The man is described as white, in his 30s and around 5ft 10ins tall. He was of large build, bald and wore a black leather coat. He was walking with a white woman who was pushing a pushchair. The dog was a white and brown Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type dog. Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

PROLIFIC BURGLAR JAILED

A man who burgled a house in Bostock's Lane, Sandiacre has appeared at Derby Crown Court. Richard Finlayson, 25, was jailed for two years after he admitted the burglary. He asked for 27 other offences, between October and November, to be taken into consideration. At 2am on November 11th, Scott Foy, who’s Bostock's Lane home was targeted, chased the intruder down the road wearing only his pyjamas. Police later caught Finlayson near the house. Mr Foy said if I had put on my shoes I would probably have caught him.

JAIL TERM FOR BURLAR WHO TARGETED 16 HOMES

A burglar has been jailed for two-and-a-half years after admitting that he broke into 16 homes. Luke Monk, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to burgling a house in Victoria Road, Sandiacre on October 20th last year. When he appeared at Derby Crown Court on Friday, January 6, the 23-year-old asked Recorder David Mason to take 15 other burglaries into account when passing sentence. Detective Inspector Tony Brittan, of the Burglary Unit, said: “It’s pleasing to be able to tell 16 victims that the man responsible for breaking into their homes has confessed to his crimes and is now behind bars."

ILKESTON BUILDING SOCIETY ROBBERY

Detectives are investigating a robbery at an Ilkeston building society in which a cash delivery was targeted. A security firm was involved in a drop off at the Nationwide Building Society in Bath Street in the town centre at 8:50pm on Monday December 12th when a group of men smashed through the front doors with sledge hammers.

They threatened the guards with the hammers and made off with a significant sum of cash in four cash boxes. As they made off one of the boxes was dropped on the street. There are no reports of any injuries as a result of the incident.

Initial reports suggest four masked men were involved in the robbery. They made off in a hatchback car.

Police have released a photograph of the sledge hammer used during the robbery.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who was in the Bath Street area and may have witnessed the incident or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the lead up to the incident. Witnesses can call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Splash Zone for West Park!

Children of all ages will have a blast at Splash Zone West Park, featuring

a splash pad; sensor activated ground level water jets and above ground water spray features to create exciting family-style fun water play experience. The outdoor play area for children and parents to enjoy will feature a water recovery system. Used water will be collected in a tank and re-used to water flowerbeds and hanging baskets throughout the summer.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:

“The Splash Zone will prove to be an excellent way of encouraging children of all ages and abilities to play outside and have some fun. This is a fantastic project that will create family fun for all and demonstrates our intention to make our parks and open spaces first class facilities for residents in Long Eaton and the wider community of Erewash.”Erewash Borough Council has received funding from Derbyshire County Council as part of the Play Builder Initiative to construct the Splash Zone at West Park in Long Eaton. The initiative is geared to promote an increase in outdoor activities for children that are safe, exciting, stimulating and accessible to all.

Free parking in Erewash this Christmas

Residents are once again able to park for free as they do their Christmas shopping in Erewash this year – thanks to Erewash Borough Council’s festive Free Parking Scheme. This year’s scheme runs from Friday 16^th December to Monday 2^nd January inclusive, with the Council’s car parks free between the busy ‘shopping hours’ of 9.30am-6pm.

The free parking is aimed at giving a welcome boost to traders and shoppers in Erewash during the run-up to Christmas and over the holiday season.

Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, says:

“We are delighted that our free parking scheme is taking place again this year. We know it is especially important in the current economic climate and is warmly welcomed by the borough’s residents and traders alike. This Council remains committed to promoting business in Erewash and to helping our Long Eaton and Ilkeston town centres thrive. We have excellent markets and shops in both towns and villages across the borough – we hope the provision of free parking in our car parks will encourage even more people to shop locally and support their community.”

Drivers should note that the free parking is aimed at shoppers and any vehicles parked before 9.30am are subject to a pay and display charge. Long Eaton Railway Station commuter’s car park is not included in the scheme.

Man sentenced for 1999 robbery

A man who committed an armed robbery in Long Eaton in 1999 has been sentenced to one years’ imprisonment suspended for two years. Gareth Rock appeared at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday December 7th for sentencing after pleading guilty to the crime in November.

Rock was arrested in June this year after a fingerprint found at the scene of the offence was identified as his. The offence happened on October 10th, 1999 at 5pm when two men went into a car accessories store called Motorworld on the Market Place in Long Eaton. The shop manager was alone in the shop when two men came into the premises and threatened him. One held a knife to the manager’s throat. Money was stolen and the manager was punched and kicked before the men ran from the shop and jumped into a car.

Fingerprints were later found at the scene of the crime and extensive enquiries were made to trace the offenders and their getaway car. The prints did not match anyone the Derbyshire database and eventually the investigation was scaled down. Earlier this year the fingerprints, recovered in 1999, were checked against the national database and a match was found.
Gareth Rock (30) was arrested at his home in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire in June 2011 and was charged with the offence in July. The other man who was involved in the robbery is still wanted by police.

HOUSE BURGLED A house onWilliam Street was burgled between 22.30 on Monday November28th and 5am on Tuesday November 29th. Items were taken from the property along with a car which was parked outside. A 23 year old man has been arrested and charged. He appeared at the Magistrates Court on December 1st.

LEAD THEFTLead has been stolen from the roof of a house on Milner Road in Long Eaton. The theft took place between 5.30pm on Tuesday December 6th and 6.15am on Wednesday December 7th. The thief climbed onto the roof and removed lead flashing causing substantial damage to the property.

EREWASH MP CONFIRMS ILKESTON STATION MEETING

Erewash MP Jessica Lee can today confirm that her meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening will take place on Thursday 12th of January. Jessica secured the meeting after questioning the Chancellor, George Osborne, about funding for Ilkeston Train Station. Jessica has ensured that the invitation has been extended to representatives from Derbyshire County Council, who are the Local Transport Authority for Erewash and also to the Erewash Business Partnership to ensure a strong case for funding it put to the Minister.

Jessica said: I am determined to see the train station re-open in Ilkeston. We have regular local meetings regarding this project so I want to ensure that the key people involved in this are present when I put the case for forward for funding.

CHILWELL MAN SENTENCED AFTER LONG EATON ROAD DEATH

Barrie Wakefield 59

A man convicted of causing death by careless driving re-appeared at Derby Crown Court on Thursday November 24th for sentencing. The court heard that on April 9th Mr Barrie Wakefield, 59, of Doncaster Grove, Long Eaton, was walking home at 10.25pm after an evening out. He was not affected significantly by what he had drunk. He walked normally across the road at the junction of Nottingham Road and Norfolk Road when he was hit by a Ford Focus driven by Mr Whyman. Paramedics and a passing doctor spent over an hour trying to resuscitate Mr Wakefield but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post mortem showed he died of multiple injuries.
At the time Mr Wakefield was wearing a light coloured top. Reconstruction by an expert showed he would have been visible for 200yards. There was a crossing 25 yards away. Although the driver of the car travelling behind clearly saw him, Mr Whyman for some reason did not. After striking Mr Wakefield the car continued for a further 50 meters before stopping.
Judge JVR Gosling said that it was clear from the report that the car was in good working order, conditions were good and that alcohol was not present when Mr Whyman was tested.

Mr Whymans defence said: “Nothing I can say can lessen the grief felt by Mr Wakefields family. Mr Whyman wishes to express his remorse and sorrow for their loss. He has no intentions or desire to drive again.”

Summing up the judge said: “This has been a tragic case. I must apply the guide line. There are people who cause death on the road who are culpable but here we have a man of 75, fit and well, driving within the speed limit in good conditions. He has not driven since and will probably not wish to drive again. I will make an order accordingly. Proper sentence here is a three month Community Order, with a curfew from 7pm to 7am, disqualification for three years when he must take a re-test and costs of £150 which must be paid within 28 days.”

Mr Whyman had been driving in excess of fifty years and had three points on his licence from a previous speeding offence. He had failed to attend a previous hearing due to his wifes ill health.

HAVE A GO EMPLOYEE INJURED AT ASDA

A woman suffered a broken wrist after she tried to stop two people who had allegedly stolen clothes from a Long Eaton supermarket. The incident occurred at around 11.50am on Tuesday, November 29th. A member of staff from Asda, in Midland Street, tried to stop two women from leaving because she believed they had taken items of clothing.

The women got into a car outside and drove off, colliding with the member of staff. She was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment. Two women, aged 40 and 22, have been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and wounding with intent. Anyone who witnessed the incident should call police on the new 101 non-emergency number, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

GARAGE ROBBER JAILED

A man has appeared at Derby Crown Court charged with the robbery at Longmoor Road Service Station in September. Mitchell Gordon, 19, of Cockayne Close, Sandiacre pleaded guilty to the robbery which took place at 8.15pm on Friday, September 16th. Gordon with a mask over his face and wearing sunglasses entered the garage and threatened two members of staff with a knife. He demanded money and was handed over £200 which he put into an orange bag. He later threw the bag containing a pair of tights which he had used for a mask, sun glasses and knife into a bush on nearby Rydal Avenue. Police were called and dog handler Kerri Church and her dog, Tex, found the discarded items in the hedge. Gordon's DNA was found on the tights. The court heard that Gordon had six previous convictions for 10 offences. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in custody.

Two men charged following Breaston factory fire
A fire broke out at a Breaston factory on the A6005 Draycott Road at around 4.15pm on Wednesday November 16th. Police received a call to the factory after a a passer-by saw the flames. At its height 35 firemen from Long Eaton, Ilkeston and Derby were tackling the blaze. The road was closed while an aerial ladder platform was used to deal with a fire in the factory roof. Nearby residents were asked to stay indoors with their windows and doors shut to avoid breathing in smoke from the fire. The wind was blowing the smoke towards the Risley direction.

The building was used by several businesses but was unoccupied when the fire broke out and no one was injured. The road was re-opened at 1am on Thursday. Derbyshire police have thanked residents in the area for following emergency service advice and remaining indoors while the fire was extinguished.

Police immediately treated the fire as suspicious and when they later examined the building they found what they believe to be cannabis growing equipment. Police suspect that hundreds of plants may have been grown inside the building.

Two men were arrested by officers searching the streets around the factory following the fire. The two men, Som Huy Vu, 47, and Hung Hguyen, 32, both Vietnamese nationals appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Friday November 18th charged with producing cannabis. A third man a 62-year-old from Castle Donington was arrested on suspicion of producing cannabis and has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police are linking the Breaston factory to other premises in Long Eaton. While visiting an industrial unit in Huss’s Lane they discovered several hundred plants suspected to be cannabis.

TREE PLANTED IN MEMORY OF BILL CAMM

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller planted a Cheale's Weeping Cherry tree at the entrance to Long Eaton Town Hall in memory of the late Councillor Bill Camm on behalf of the Parklands Stroke Club.

Also present at the ceremony were Councillor Chris Corbett, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, the County Councillor for Sawley, Councillor Cheryl Pidgeon and members of the Parklands Stroke Club.

Erewash Borough Council have worked with the Parklands Stroke Club in Long Eaton to commemorate the support Bill Camm had given over the years to the club by the laying of a plaque and planting of a tree within the Borough.

A bottle of stout from the local Nutbrook Brewery, which had been brewed in memory of Bill and named the Bill Camm Stout for this year's Long Eaton Beer Festival was opened during

the planting and half poured in with the soil and the remainder shared amongst those present to toast his memory.

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller, said:

“I am delighted to have been able to assist with the tree planting in memory of Bill Camm. Bill was a talented carpenter and a wonderful friend to so many people. He was my mentor during my early days in local politics and despite our political differences his advice and support was invaluable. ‘Cheers’ Bill, you will be sorely missed by so many people but your memory will never falter.”

Pat Simpson, Secretary of Parklands, said:

“We are delighted that the Mayor agreed to plant the tree on our behalf and that we were able to recognise Bill’s involvement with the Club in this way. The Club has been in existence for the past 25 years, supporting both stroke sufferers and their carers.”

Councillor Camm was an Independent Member and had served on the former Long Eaton Urban District Council and then on Erewash Borough Council following Local Government Reorganisation in 1974. He was also a long-serving Derbyshire County Council Councillor for Sawley.

The Parklands Stroke Club meets at the Petersham Hall, Grasmere Road, and Long Eaton on alternative Friday afternoons from 2.15 to 4.15pm. New members are always welcome.

Long Eaton’s Christmas Lights celebration will be a magical evening of seasonal sights, festive fun and unmissable free family entertainment when the big ‘switch-on’ is held on Friday 2nd December.

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller, will

‘light up’ the town to officially launch the Christmas season and Erewash Borough Council has once again lined up a feast of free family fun to ensure a fabulous night for everyone to enjoy.

A funfair will add to the celebration event, which will also feature music, carol-singing, festive street entertainers and, of course, an appearance by Santa Claus. A magical Pride in Erewash Festival of Light illuminated display by local young people will lead up to the switching on of the lights. The whole event will take place on the Market Place alongside a Christmas Craft Market which has been organised by Erewash Chamber of Trade.

STAGE RAISE £1k FOR OLIVIA

Stage One held a charity afternoon/evening on Tuesday November 8th in aid of Olivia.

Olivia Francis was born with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia/Atrophy which has made her completely blind. She has been accepted for stem cell treatment in China, the only treatment in the world that could make her see. This procedure is not available on the NHS and the UK is years away from even researching this kind of treatment properly.

Olivia will be two years old on December 25th and despite being blind she is a very happy, smiley noisy brave little girl, her speech is amazing and she tries to say every word she hears and loves animal noises. Although Olivia has movement issues she is able to stand and walk sideways around the house holding onto the walls and furniture she has even been brave enough to attempt walking forwards without any help from anyone. Olivia loves splashing in the bath with her older brother and the swing is her favourite at the park, she already has a love for music and will dance to anything played.

All the staff at Stage One worked for nothing including DJ Jules with their wages going into the kitty. There was a raffle, blackout cards, guess how much money was in the piggy bank and the Karaoke was £1 a go. In addition Hamburgers and hot dogs were on sale with the proceeds going into the fund. If you had a guess, the pig contained £7.50 the winner was Karen (£5.87) I was a mile out with £27.80. The Karaoke made £32.17 (someone must have sang half a verse) and although most of the singers were amateurs Fred the Spread threw in a pound and sang Sea of Heartbreak. The total raised came to £933.17 and Landlady Shell announced that she would make it up to a round £1000.

Olivia’s mum Gemma said :

“It is overwhelming how many people want to help us and are taking part. I can’t thank Stage One enough. We have raised £13K up to now and in addition an event at Keltruck Scania raised £3,800 and the managing director is going to put a personal donation of 10K into the fund.”

On an overcast but dry Sunday morning a crowd of around 600 gathered around the war memorial for this years Remembrance Service.

Colin Harrison President of the Long Eaton Branch of the Royal British Legion has been a member since 1948. After the Service he said: “The turnout was brilliant, very very good. It just shows the respect the people of Long Eaton have. It was very moving when the parade did the march past and people applauded. There seems to be more xxx than ever on the memorial. The Service here in Long Eaton just seems to get better and better.|”

Jessica Lee, the Member of Parliament for Erewash, attended Services in Long Eaton, Ilkeston and Sandiacre, she commented:

“I would like to thank the hundreds of people that turned out across Erewash to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. All services I attended were extremely moving. I would like to thank the Royal British Legion for their planning of the services on the day, and for the work they do during the year supporting service families.”

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fight in Long Eaton in which a man suffered facial injuries. At around 1am on Saturday, October 22nd police were called to an altercation involving a large group of people outside The Westgate Suites, Long Eaton. When they arrived they found a 21-year-old man on the floor with a cut to his head and a broken jaw. Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the incident take place or has any information about what happened. A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of affray and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

RING STOLEN FROM HIGH STREET SHOP

A man walked into David Christopher on the High Street and asked to look at a signet ring. He then snatched the ring from the assistant and ran off. The ring was white and yellow gold with a diamond. The incident occurred at 12.20pm on Monday October 24th. The man is described as tall with very short dark hair and wearing a coloured anorak. Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police by calling their new police non-emergency number, 101.

CYCLES STOLEN

Two cycles were stolen from a shed at the rear of the Harrington Arm Public House in Sawley. The theft took place between 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Friday October 28th. Both bikes were chained to a steel bench so the thieves had obviously gone prepared. One of the bikes was a Barracuda worth £40-£50 but the other a brand new Mongoose Fireball jump bike was worth over £400. It is the only bike of its kind sold in the area and has full suspension, disk brakes front and rear and white enamel wheels. The frame is white with mongoose in black letters and on the down tube it says fireball. Anyone with information should call police on the new non-emergency number 101

APPEAL FOR INFORMATION AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT

Detectives are appealing for information after a woman was sexually assaulted in Ilkeston.

At around 1.30am on Sunday, October 30, a 24-year-old woman was walking in Wharncliffe Road after a night out when she was approached by a man who offered to help her get home.

She walked with him and they entered Rutland Recreation ground, in West End Drive, where they were joined by another man, who seemed to be friends with the first man.

The two men sexually assaulted her and took items from her handbag before leaving her in the park. She left the park and was helped by a passer-by, who called police. She has described the men as white and in their early 20s. They were both slim, clean shaven and spoke with local accents. One had short dark hair and wore a grey hooded zip-up sports top. The other man wore a black zip-up winter jacket.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the two men, or the victim, before the attack, to contact them. Anyone who was in the area of Rutland Park at around 1.30am on Sunday should also get in touch.

Detective Inspector Tim Cadman is in charge of Operation Diamond, a specialist team established to investigate serious sexual and violent crimes. He said: “This is a despicable attack on a vulnerable young woman who was trying to get home after a night out.

“Her attacker has lured her into danger by pretending to help and she has then been subjected to a sexual assault and had property stolen as well. It’s vital that anyone with information comes forward to help us find these men, no matter how small they feel the detail may be.”

Excitement is building for this year’s Erewash Bonfire and Fireworks extravaganza, which is being held on Friday 4th November and promises another sparkling night of fantastic family fun.Organised by Erewash Borough Council, the annual spectacular always attracts thousands of people and remains one the biggest community bonfires in the area. The dazzling 2011 firework display will be set to music based on a theme of ‘All Fired Up’, while the evening will also feature funfair rides, stalls and food to ensure a fabulous night out for people of all ages. Gates open at 6pm and the event will begin with local schoolchildren taking part in a magical procession with illuminated puppets at 6.30pm followed by the official ‘lighting’ of the bonfire by the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller, at 7pm. The firework display begins at 7.30pm.

Gills Travel have confirmed that they will be replacing the old Notts and Derby 16 service which was axed on September 5th. The new No9 service which begins on Monday November 14th will mean that after two months passengers on Hawthorne Avenue and Thoresby Road will be able to get into town and do their shopping.

MAYOR LAUNCHES 2011 POPPY APPEAL

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller, recently launched this year’s Poppy Appeal at a coffee morning hosted by the Ilkeston Branch of the Royal British Legion at Ilkeston Town Hall. The Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal is its main fundraising campaign nationally towards its widespread work to help members of the serving and ex-service community.

This year’s appeal is again focusing on supporting the Afghan generation of the Armed Forces family. Since 2003 the Legion has helped more than 10,000 serving, ex-Service and family members who are part of the Afghan and Iraq generation. With the Afghan conflict continuing at its current intensity it is inevitable that this number will continue to rise and the Legion intends to be there for them and their families today and for the rest of their lives.
Councillor Kevin Miller, the Mayor of Erewash, says:

“I am proud and honoured to support this year’s Poppy Appeal and, indeed, the important and vital welfare and support schemes run by the Royal British Legion both in Erewash and nationally. KEBABS AND MEAT DESTROYED

Nearly 11 tonnes of unfit meat seized from a Long Eaton kebab business has been destroyed by Erewash Borough Council after magistrates agreed to its request to have it condemned. The Council’s Food Health and Safety team seized the meat from MacDonna’s Kebabs to remove it from the food chain after it was discovered it did not meet food hygiene regulations.

Officers visited the premises at Unit 6, Breydon Industrial Estate, Huss’s Lane, Long Eaton, when they became aware the business had been set up without going through the approval process required by law. Notices were issued initially to stop the business making any further products and to stop the kebabs already made from being moved or used. After further investigations the Council was unable to confirm where the meat used to make the kebabs had originated or if it had been produced in properly approved premises. Since there could be no guarantee that the meat had been produced, processed and distributed in line with food hygiene regulations, the Council could not be sure it was fit to eat.

Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, says:

“Our team moved swiftly to seize the meat and the kebabs to ensure they did not reach the food chain. We then applied to Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court, where a District Judge confirmed our actions and ordered the destruction of the meat.”
Although Council officers provided information to those running the business on the approvals needed for a meat processing unit, they have not applied for the necessary permissions and all production has ceased. The Council team is currently continuing its investigations into the activities at the premises.

HOUSE GUTTED IN BLAZE

A fire in Leicester Street was so ferocious it burned through the upstair floors and the roof leaving just a shell. The fire started just after 5am on Wednesday October 5th and it took 28 firemen to contain the blaze. A woman and two children had left the building before firemen arrived. Properties on either side were evacuated as a precaution.

On the same day a fire at a sub station near the Tappers Harker on Main Street, resulted in 12 people being evacuated from their homes. The fire spread to nearby trees and a building occupied by Leather Master. The fire was out by 5.30am and firemen left the scene at 7am. Over 280 properties were left without electricity. A spokeswoman for Western Power said that power had been restored by 3pm. The sub-station fire is being treated as arson.

Firemen were called to Haddon Way at 10.45pm on Saturday October 8th. They arrived to find a row of trees on fire and were on the scene for half an hour.

90th Anniversary of the Long Eaton War Memorial

The Long Eaton Memorial War Fund was established in November 1919 for the following purposes – to erect a memorial to the fallen of the town, to provide help to ex-servicemen, Widows and dependants, to render assistance to the disabled: Total funds raised £3674.

The Long Eaton War Memorial is not a Cenotaph, (as a Cenotaph is an empty tomb in memorial to a person or persons whose remains are elsewhere) it is a memorial cross designed by Mr. J. N. Comper of West Norwood. It takes the form of a traditional old English Cross of the 15th Century and is made of Clipsham limestone standing 22 feet 6 inches high. The lantern shaped head: The West side facing Market Place portrays “The Great Sacrifice with mother and friend standing by”. The South side depicts “The figure of St Michael – the heavenly champion of right and justice”. The North side is St George for merry England slaying the dragon”. The East side “The Mother and holy child” is a reminder of the mothers sacrifice. The head, shaft and base are the work of Mr. W. M. Gough, architectural sculptor from London. The work connected with the erection of the steps, foundation etc. was executed by Mr. E. E. Stevens of Long Eaton. Mr.J. F. Dodd was the local architect.

On Sunday 23rd October 1921 the Memorial was dedicated to the 503 men who died between 1914 and 1919. Shoppers beware! On Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October the “Hunt The Pumpkin Competition” will take place in Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres! PETROL STATION HOLD UP

A robbery took place at Longmoor Road Service Station on Friday September 16th. At 8.15pm a man with a mask over his face and wearing sunglasses entered the garage and threatened two members of staff with a knife. He demanded money which he put into an orange bag. He then left and walked up Curzon Street. Police were called and dog handlers searched the area. The orange bag containing the mask, sun glasses and knife was discovered in a bush on Rydal Avenue. Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time or saw anyone acting suspiciously on Longmoor Road or Rydal Road.

COLLISION ON BRIAN CLOUGH WAY

Six vehicles were involved in a collision on the A52 near Sandiacre at 7.50 on Wednesday September 21st. A fifteen foot length of barrier was damaged and police conned of the second lane. The carriageway was cleared by 9.30am. No one was seriously hurt.

HAY BLAZE

Firefighters were called when nine bales of hay caught fire on a meadow on Wallis Close, Draycott. The incident occurred at 1.30am on Wednesday September 13th. The cause is not known. No one was injured.

ELECTRIC SCOOTER IN COLLISION

A collision took place between a Citoren and an electric scooter on Repton Road Long Eaton at 2pm on Wednesday September 14th. It would appear that the door of the Citron was opened into the path of the scooter. The scooter rider who sustained a black eye and cuts to the face was taken to the QMC but was not thought to be seriously injured.

MERCHANT NAVY DAY

Erewash Borough Council honoured more than 40,000 brave comrades who perished during the Second World War when it marked the annual Merchant Navy Day last Saturday 3rd September. The Council raised the Red Ensign – the flag, known commonly as ’The Red Duster’, that flies proudly on British Merchant Ships – at both Long Eaton Town Hall.

The Mayor of Erewash and the Deputy Mayor represented the borough at the wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorials Long Eaton at 11am.

The Merchant Navy was a reserved occupation, which meant volunteers were not permitted to join the armed forces during the Second World War. However, the volunteers made a vital contribution to the war effort and each day 200,000 of them faced dangers at sea to keep the country’s supply lines open.

Within hours of the start of the war, the first casualty – the liner ‘Athenia’ – was torpedoed with the loss of 118 lives. An average of more than one ship was lost every day of the Second World War, while battles with ‘U’ boats resulted in the sinking of more than 2,500 merchant ships.

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller, said:

“It is important to honour the role played by merchant seafarers during the Second World War, many of who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Erewash Borough Council is proud to again fly the ‘Red Duster’ above its Town Hall in recognition of everything they did for this country and to be a part of the ceremony to mark Merchant Navy Day.”

ARRESTS MADE AFTER STABBINGS

Two men have appeared in court charged with attempted murder following the double stabbing on Waverley Street, Long Eaton, on August 20th. Police in Nottingham have arrested four men in connection with the incident and after questioning two were charged. Robert Watson from Bulwell appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates on Friday August 26th. He was remanded in custody. A second man John McNee, 31, appeared in court on Tuesday August 30th charged with attempted murder. He was further charged with possession of a firearm and was also remanded in custody.

The arrests follow an attack on Waverley Street opposite Tesco at 5am on August 20th. A 45 year old Long Eaton man and his 16 year old son were taken to QMC with stab wounds. The teenager who suffered two wounds to his body was released the following day. His father, who was stabbed nine times in the body and legs, was in a critical but stable condition and was kept in until the following Friday.

DOUBLE STABBING IN LONG EATON

Police are re-appealing for information after a father and son suffered stab wounds during an incident in Long Eaton. Police were called to Waverley Street shortly after 5am on Saturday, August 20th, after reports that two people had been injured following a disturbance in the street opposite Tesco.

Witnesses reported seeing a group of men leave the scene in a black car. A 45-year-old man and his 16-year-old son were taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment. Part of Waverley Street was cordoned off for most of Saturday and the Tesco filling station was closed.

Oxford Street was also cordoned off. It is believed the father tried to get back to his flat but collapsed in the street. A neighbour on Oxford Street said that they had heard a disturbance outside around 4am that morning.

The teenager, who suffered two wounds to his body, was released on Sunday afternoon. His father, who received nine stab wounds to his legs and body, was still in hospital on Tuesday evening and remained in a critical but stable condition. Police have been studying CCTV footage in the area, conducting house-to-house inquiries and taking statements from witnesses.

Detectives say several witnesses have come forward but they are appealing for anyone who has information, but who has yet to speak to police, to call 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

POLICE SEEK ATTACKER

Police are still trying to trace a man responsible for an attack on a woman in Victory Close, Long Eaton. The woman in her 30s suffered head injuries during the assault which took place at 3am on August 12th. Paramedics were in attendance and treated the woman before she was taken to Queen's Medical Centre.

A police spokesman said they were treating the incident as ‘domestic’ and they knew

the man they were searching for. He added, “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.”

INQUEST

The inquest has opened into the death of Lisa Derriscott, 33, of Derby Road, Long Eaton, who was found on the back seat of a burned out car on Wilne Lane on August 3rd. The inquest heard that Ms Derriscott was a clinical psychologist who worked at St Andrew's Healthcare, a secure mental health facility in Rainworth. Shaun Tudor, one of its patients recently appeared at Nottingham Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a 10year old boy in woods near Rainworth. Police in Nottingham said they were "extremely concerned" he had been allowed out of care and has asked for a review of why he was on unescorted leave on 20th July.

A St Andrew's Healthcare spokesman said: "The circumstances surrounding Lisa's death are subject to ongoing police inquiries."

BODY FOUND IN BURNED OUT CAR

Police launched an investigation after a womans body was discovered on the back seat of a burned out car. A man called police at 8.30am on Wednesday, August 3rd to report a car on fire in a field off Wilne Lane, Long Eaton. Officers and firefighters arrived and discovered a woman’s body on the back seat of the Vauxhall Corsa.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious and the coroner has been informed. The woman has been named as 33 year old Lisa Derriscott of Derby Road, Long Eaton. The road was closed following the discovery of the car but was re-opened later in the afternoon. Detective Inspector Mark Argyle said: “We are treating this as an unexplained death but we do not believe it to be suspicious. We have told the woman’s next of kin and we are preparing a file for the coroner.”

ABSTRACT ART

A new art exhibition by Lincolnshire artist Stuart Parkin opens on 4th August for a month-long run at Erewash Museum’s Lally Gallery. Stuart’s 2-D artworks feature a range of media, from acrylic to pastel, and are inspired by the East Coast and its dramatic skylines, surrounding landscapes and the changing weather.

Artist Stuart says he works intuitively and the finished art is not necessarily an exact representation of the subject matter, which is often simplified and abstracted to evoke a mood or atmosphere. Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:

“This exhibition will be both fascinating and inspiring and we are delighted to host the collection for our summer display in the Lally Gallery.”

Artworks will be available to purchase and the exhibition runs to 3^rd September.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ROBBERY AND BREAK IN

A man has been arrested in connection with a robbery and a break-in at a shop. At around 10.15pm on Sunday, July 31st, four friends were walking along an alleyway that leads onto West Park, Long Eaton. Two of the boys were aged 16 and two of them were 15. They were approached by two older youths, who assault the 16-year-olds and one of the 15-year-olds, demanding property from them. The robbers took a bag and a mobile phone from the group before running off.

Both men wore dark clothes and one was carrying a knife. The boys make their way to the Box Office, in Market Place, where staff raised the alarm.

Meanwhile, six hours later police received a call just before 4.15 reporting that two men were breaking into Holland and Barratt, in High Street, Long Eaton. Officers attended and arrested a 17-year-old youth nearby on suspicion of robbery and attempted burglary. He has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

GIRL SHOUTS RAPE

Police in Long Eaton who had been appealing for information about an alleged rape that occurred on Hayworth Park, off Hayworth Road in Sandiacre, are no longer investigating the incident after the girl who made the allegation admitted that the rape never happened. Officers who investigated the allegation have given strong words of advice to the girl but no further action will be taken.

POLICE INVESTIGATE BAR ASSAULT

Police in Long Eaton are appealing for witnesses after an assault at a Long Eaton bar. A 52-year-old woman from Spondon was assaulted by two women as she stood at the sink in the toilets during a Soul and Motown night at the West Gate Suites. They punched her in the face and left. The victim then made her way into the main room and was walking towards the dancefloor when she felt another punch to the left side of her face, which caused her to fall. The offenders are both thought to be in their late 20s and about 5ft 4in or 5ft 5in tall. One had long dark hair and was wearing a black trilby style hat and dark clothing. TWO MEN ARRESTED AFTER ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

For the second time in six months robbers have targeted the Santander bank on Long Eaton High Street. Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted armed robbery which took place at 6.45pm on Monday, July 18^th while security guards, assisted by staff, were filling up the ATM machine in the bank.

As they were working at the machine two men started smashing their way through the glass front door and side window. The guards managed to secure the money and they and the bank staff locked themselves in the back of the bank.

The offenders used a hammer to try to smash the security equipment to get the money but failed to do so. The men, who were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas or face masks, fled the building and several witnesses saw them run along a pedestrianised road onto Beaconsfield car park.

They got into a black VW Golf and sped off along Beaconsfield Road onto Main Street, to the Tappers Harker Island and then towards Fields Farm Road in the direction of Sawley.

Just after 9pm police officers found the car abandoned on Cobden Street, Long Eaton. Nothing was stolen and no-one was injured.

Last weekend following enquiries police arrested two men in Leeds. The pair aged 22 and 25 are being held in custody.

Long Eaton man Shamsher Sahota has been ordered to pay a total of £215 by Derby Magistrates after they found him guilty of dropping a cigarette end in the street.

Mr Sahota,47, of Chesterfield Avenue, had been given an on-the-spot fine by an Erewash Borough Council Neighbourhood Warden but he denied committing the offence and chose to have his case heard in court rather than pay the £75 fine. He was convicted by magistrates on July 14th.

Following the case, Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, said:

“Dropping cigarette ends – or any litter – in the street is anti-social and will not be tolerated. This case should serve as a warning to all those who think it is acceptable to drop litter and let someone else clean up after them. There is no excuse for this behaviour as litter bins are provided in all public places and regularly emptied. Erewash Borough Council will continue to issue Fixed Penalty Notices or, where necessary, prosecute anyone caught dumping litter in our streets, parks and other public places.”

CARNIVAL 2011

If there is one day in the year that you can predict wet weather it is Carnival day and at 10.45 right on cue it started to rain. Outside the Royal Oak as hundreds huddled under brollys and struggled with packer macs the Breaston Highlanders Band simply ignored the wet. They are obviously made of sterner stuff.

The Road Parade sponsored by ESP Cars set of from their assembly point at Sheet Store Industrial Estate at 11am. They turned right at the station and continued along Tamworth Road where they were joined by the many walking parties who were assembled on the Royal Oak car park.

MAN SHOT NEAR MONKEY PARK

Two men were arrested on suspicion of assault after a man was shot near the junction of Oakleys Road and Main Street. The incident occurred at 12.10 am on Wednesday June 1st.

Officers on foot patrol came across the man on Main Street and noticed blood on his hand. He was taken to QMC for treatment to the injured hand and to have a pellet removed from his shoulder. The injured man was one of a group of people who had been sleeping rough in a wooded area between Oakleys Road and the Golden Brook. It is believed that the group had been drinking. When an air rifle was pointed at the victim he put up his hand and said “You wouldn’t dare.” At this point the man with the gun fired and the pellet passed through his hand. As he fled the scene he was shot in the shoulder.

Police cordoned off the area and carried out a search. They arrested one man at 1.30am and a second man at 1.45am. The two men aged 49 and 59 were taken into custody. They were later released on

During a search of the area police found an air rifle in bushes.

On Sunday morning a care worker visiting a house across the road told the Extra. “People have been staying on the site on and off for several months but I’ve not seen anyone for the last three or four days.”

Sandiacre stunt cyclist Joe Oakley has narrowly missed out on reaching the final of Britains Got Talent.

The nineteen year old, who performed a series of spectacular stunts, made it into the last three but after the judges were split he did not get enough telephone votes from viewers to go through. He said afterwards:
"I said earlier today I wanted a good comment from Simon and he said I was the best act of the night so far, so I couldn't ask for more.” Joes interest in cycling began aged 10 when his Dad bought him a bike and he began competing at the age of 13. Joe has competed in the world championships and won in 2009. He is currently British trial bike champion and ranks ninth in the world. He also won the Junior Trial Bike World Championship in Australia two years ago.
Joe lives in Sandiacre with his mum and dad and has one sister. He runs Trialsport GB, a display team which claims to offer ‘exciting and unusual attractions’ at shows all around the country.

SUPPORT FOR PATH IS GROWING

The support for a path on Sawley Road is growing. After contacting Derbyshire County Council requesting a reduction of the speed limit and path on Sawley Road in Breaston I have been contacted by letter asking for letters of support .

To this end I have pointed those who have voiced support to contact D.C.C via e-mail or post . To date I would like to thank Firfeilds School Breaston, Sawley Infants School, Sawley Junior School, Long Eaton Running Club, Sawley Police SNT, Breaston Police SNT, Breaston Equestrian Centre, This it would seem will be a show of numbers to " Quantify " the need for a footpath . To this end if anyone feels that this road would benefit from improvements of this nature I would ask they do likewise by contacting D.C.C.

SKIP ALIGHT

A fire crew from Long Eaton were called to tackle a blaze in a skip on Wilne Road. The skip caught fire on Monday May 30th at 2am. The fire was quickly extinguished. Firemen do not know how it started. No one was injured.

Vodaphone andO2 are planning to install an 11.8m phone mast near Wharfedale Road. Councillors are expected to approve the application after plans for a 12.5m-high mast were rejected in February.

TAXI ROBBER - POLICE RELEASE IMAGE

Officers investigating the robbery of a taxi driver on Briar Gate, Long Eaton have issued an image of a suspect.The incident occurred just after 9pm on Sunday April 3rd when a man approached a taxi driver who was waiting in the taxi rank on the Market Place. The man asked to be taken to Briar Gate and sat behind the driver. When they were on Briar Gate the man leaned forward, put a knife to the throat of the driver and demanded money. The 53-year-old driver handed over some cash and his mobile phone was also taken. During the robbery he sustained a slight cut on his hand.The offender was white, in his mid twenties, about six feet tall, with a slim build and short black hair. He had a very thin oval face and was wearing a light grey hoody. BURGLAR DISTURBED
A burglar was disturbed by a neighbour when he tried to break into a house on Hawthorne Avenue. He knocked on the door and when there was no reply he tried to force his way in. Fortunately someone heard him and when he was approached he ran off. The incident occurred on Thursday May 19th. He was described as thin, 6ft 3in/6ft 4in and wearing a red and black top with a hood and dark tracksuit bottoms. Anyone with information should call 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

NATURE RESERVE SAFE

Fire crews and the Environment Agency were called to a chemical spillage on Acton Lane industrial estate after a drum on a lorry began to leak. It was feared the chemical could leak into nearby Forbes Hole nature reserve but an agency spokesman said that there had been no seepage and that the Fire Service had used sand to absorb the plastisol which was not a toxic product. The incident took place on Thursday May 19th and involved around 200 litres of the substance which is used for screen printing.

PEOPLE OF SAWLEY SAY GOODBYE

Whenever election time came around in Sawley there was always a good turn out for Bill Camm. Last Friday the turnout for his funeral was equally as impressive. On a sunny but blustery day the people of Sawley turned out in their hundreds to say goodbye to the peoples champion.

Over the course of the last fifty years there cannot be many residents in the ward who have not been helped or know someone who has been helped by the little man with the big heart.

British Legion of whom Bill was a member having served in the Royal Artillery. They slow marched down the church drive in front of the hearse with their standard raised. Formed at the church entrance was a guard of honour comprising of the Royal British Legion, the Fire Brigade and the St Johns Ambulance.

With the church packed the service was relayed to a big screen in the church hall which was also full and standing. Around sixty people who could not be accommodated listened to the service outside on two large speakers. After the opening prayer and the first hymn ‘There is a greenhill far away’ friends and colleagues reflected on Bills life.

Council Leader Chris Corbett spoke first and talked of the bucket of tarmac Bill had produced to repair the pot holes in Sawley because he couldn’t wait for the County Council to do it, and the time he borrowed a Rolls Royce to give voters a lift to the polling station. Carol Hart County Councillor for Breadsall and West Hallam explained that she had asked someone at County Hall if they had a list of the committees Bill had served on over the years and was told that it would be quicker to produce a list of those he hadn’t. She spoke of the number of votes Bill regularly received and said that at one count an officer had commented that it would be easier to weigh Bills votes instead of counting them. Michael Hopkins Chairman of Sawley and Long Eaton Park Cricket Club told of Bills long association with the club. He was elected President to the then Sawley Parkside CC in 1970 and had remained President ever since. He spoke of the time Bill entered a room where the floor had been removed and fell through. After swearing everyone to secrecy he then told everyone himself.

The service which continued with the hymn He Who Would Valiant Be and ended with The Lords My Shepherd, was followed by a private burial in Stapleford.

BUS WAR LATEST

Latest developments in Long Eaton's bus war are that, from Tuesday 3rd May Premiere's Red 5 was extended to the Dales estate all day. On the same date the Bargain Bus 4 mysteriously disappeared - I understand they may have a nasty shock in store for us in July, but at least Gills can breath easy for now - their customers did a champion job in sticking by the company.

On Saturday 30th April Trentbarton introduced new, smaller buses on the Old Sawley-Ilkeston 15, though persisting with the 20m. headway. Whilst these buses will find it easier to get through the traffic, there will continue to be problems of bunching and overcrowding will be a bugbear. I think they are going to be looking at the timetable.

With the impending demise of the no.19 on 1st August I think some of the bus companies should be looking at taking it on commercially - loadings continue to be good. I travelled on one with 20 passengers on it a couple of weeks ago, and this is much better than the Bargain Bus 4 was ever achieving. The bus companies should be willing to accept lower profit margins to run a bus service that is needed and wanted & stop messing about putting buses in front of buses, which is a plainly stupid way to act.

Responding to Adele Marsh in the last edition of Website Extra, I understand the reason the Star trak signs no longer work (with the odd exception of the one at Draycott Market Place, Nottingham bound) is that Leicester CIty Council, who control the system, switched it off.

The funeral arrangements are as follows: Service Friday 20th May, All Saints Church Sawley 12.30 followed by burial at Stapleford Cemetery.

MAIN ROAD TO CLOSE FOR A MONTH

Tamworth Road is to close from the Green to Friar Street for resurfacing work. The work will be carried out every night from Monday - Friday between 7pm and midnight starting on Monday May 2nd. Diversions will be in place along Derby Road, Wilsthorpe Road and Tamworth Road. The road is due to re-open on June 6th but the council say that work may be finished earlier.

CAT KILLED ON OAKLAND AVENUE
A resident on Oakland Avenue heard a screaming noise in the street at around 9.15 on Saturday morning, April 23rd, and dashed out to investigate. Two Staffordshire bull terriers were running up the road one had a cat in its mouth. After dropping their quarry they ran off down Tamworth Road. The woman took the cat to Ashfield House Vets on Derby Road but it was dead when they arrived. Neither dog was wearing a collar. She phoned the RSPCA who advised her to ring the police.The police took down the details and gave her an incident number. She then rang the council dog warden but they said they could do nothing without more details. Another concerned resident told the Extra that she had seen the two dogs in the street before and she thought they lived somewhere on Tamworth Road. She said, “People should be aware, next time it could been a toddler and not a cat.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
A resident at The Grange Residential Home, in Bostocks Lane, Sandiacre celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday April 18th. Grace Gooding has been at the home for six years, since her husband died, and her birthday corresponded with the opening of a new wing at the home. Barrie and Jo-Ann Chambers who bought the Grange last year have spent £230,000 on improvements which included the new wing which will now enable them to offer 36 beds.

MISSING WOMAN RETURNS HOME

A Long Eaton woman who was missing for five days has returned home safely. Michelle Roe (37) and her teenage daughter left their Tamworth Road home on Monday April 11th and caught the train to Nottingham. They parted at around 5.30pm and Mrs Roe was not seen again until she returned home on Sunday April 17th. Police had grown concerned and had appealed for information about her whereabouts.

MAN ATTACKED ON OLD MARKET PLACE

A man was hit on the head from behind and robbed on the old market place after withdrawing cash from the ATM at Santander on the High Street (pictured). The incident occurred at 11pm on Friday April 15th. After withdrawing the cash the man took a short cut through the old market place at the side of the bank. After knocking their 42 year old victim to the ground the three assailants kicked him and went then through his pockets before making off with cash. The robbers are described as male wearing blue jeans and white trainers. Police are appealing for witnesses. CANNABIS DISCOVERY
Police discovered hundreds of cannabis plants when they executed a drugs warrant at an industrial unit on Acton Avenue Long Eaton. Officers searched the premises at dinner time on Wednesday, April 13th and discovered around 400 plants. A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of producing cannabis. After being interviewed he was released on bail pending further inquires.

JEWELLERY AND COINS STOLEN
Police are appealing for information about a burglary at a house on Harlaxton Drive, Long Eaton. The burglary happened between 7.30am and 5.30pm on Monday April 11 while the occupiers were out. When they returned home they found the front door open and realised that the back door had been forced. The house had been thoroughly searched and jewellery and coin collections had been stolen. Some of the coins are unusual and some of the jewellery is particularly distinctive.
Inspector Tony Brittan who is involved in the investigation said:

“This is a heartbreaking crime for the victims. Over the years they have enjoyed collecting these coins and jewellery and are devastated by the theft of their property.”
The jewellery includes a diamond and amethyst ring made by Eaton’s jewellers, a sapphire and diamond ring, an emerald and diamond ring, a dark blue/purple opal and diamond ring, a large diamond ring and a pair of diamond and pearl drop earrings. The coins included a set of 1887 Jubilee coins, some guineas and a number of sovereigns.

LONG EATON MAN DIES IN ROAD ACCIDENT

A Long Eaton man was killed in a road accident on Saturday evening 9th April. Barrie Wakefield, 59, of Doncaster Grove was hit by a Ford Focus near the junction of Nottingham Road and Norfolk Road at 10.25pm.

Paramedics, helped by a passing doctor, spent over an hour trying to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barry had formerly worked at Chillwell Depot where he was shop steward before entering the licensing trade as barman and cellar man at the White Lion in Sawley. He then spent many years in the lace trade before returning as manager at the Queens Hotel on Shakespeare Street. When the Queens closed prior to being converted to flats he moved to the Feathers in Sandiacre. Recently he has been a regular in the Harrington Arms on Leopold Street and The Twitchel.

Bill Camm

There will be 126 candidates standing in next month’s Erewash Borough Council election, which takes place on Thursday 5th May. At the close of nominations at 12noon April 4th the candidates were formally confirmed. Six political parties plus Independents will be represented in the election, which will see 51 councillors elected to represent the 22 wards which make up the Borough Council. There will however be two well known names missing from the ballot papers when Erewash go to the polls.In Sawley it will be the first time in 50 years that Bill Camm has not taken part in the local elections. Bill was first elected in 1961 and is currently the longest serving member on the council. In 1970 he was elected as the Sawley councillor on Derbyshire County Council a position he has held ever since and was elected Mayor in 1991/92. In February he suffered a stroke from which he is still recovering. The latest news is that he has been moved to a recovery ward and is on the mend. So in this election the three main parties will be fielding three candidates each in the Sawley ward for the first time in years. In Nottingham Road Brenda White is standing down after 40 years in local politics. Brenda was first elected to the old Long Eaton Urban District Council in 1971, a seat she retained after the Borough Council was introduced in 1974. She was elected Mayor in 1998/99. She said:

"I feel it is time to go. I would like to have more time for myself. I like writing poetry and sketching and have three grand daughters and Barney the cat."

After 60 years in the Labour Party and working in every election since she was ten years old no one can say she hasn’t earned a rest.

TAXI DRIVER ROBBED
A taxi driver was robbed after picking up a man on the rank in Long Eaton. The incident occurred shortly after 9.15 on Sunday April 3rd. Several other Taxis had already refused to pick the man up. He said he was going to Petersham and as they travelled along Briar Gate he produced a knife and told the driver to head for Grasmere Road. When they got there he got out, taking with him the drivers takings around £35 and his mobile phone. He is described as 6ft. Tall and wearing a grey, hooded top. BUS SERVICE AXED

The number 19 bus, which runs from Long Eaton to Sawley and Sandiacre via Fields Farm Road and Bosworth Way is to be axed following Derbyshire County Councils decision to withdraw funding. The decision was made as part of the authority’s plans to save more than £3million over the next two years. The council are aiming to find a commercial operator to run the service but Labour county councillor Roland Hosker fears that without the subsidy bus fares under a new operator would be higher. The service has been a lifeline for many elderly people in the area, especially those without a car.

WEST PARK ATTACK
A 37 year old man was attacked while walking onto West Park from Parkside Avenue . The incident occurred between 9.30pm and 9.45pm Wednesday April 6th. He was attacked by two men, who punched him to the head before walking off. He suffered a fractured eye socket, fractured cheek and grazes to his hand. The victim went to a nearby house where the homeowner called police. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment. He has described his attackers as white and in their early 20s. They were around 5ft 9ins tall. One had short, dark hair and the other, who had a shaved head, wore a light coloured tracksuit. DANCE ACADEMY SUCCESS

Arabesque Dance and Theatre Academy from Long Eaton are celebrating yet another fantastic Start to the year. After enjoying performing their first show “I Believe” back in December (at Wilsthorpe Community School) it was hard to believe that the pupils would have the energy to excel any further, but in true Arabesque style, 46 competitors took to the stage at their most recent dance competition, Colsterworth Festival of Performing Arts and gained and record 33 places (1st 2nd and 3rd) and were awarded 5 trophies.

Also pictured across the back are members of the Adult Team “Dancin’ Through The Decades” the 19 strong team took to the stage and won their section for the 3rd time running, last year they were asked to perform again to open the closing ceremony of the 2010 Derby Arts Festival. On Saturday 26th March they were also invited back to the 15th Anniversary Celebration Concert for the Colsterworth Festival to perform their routine as the Finale to this prestigious event. Many Adjudicators comment on how enthusiastic all of the team members are and how nice it is that lots of the parents are involved with the classes at the Academy.

The Academy Principal Mrs Kerry Brooks-Ball commented on “how extremely proud I am of all the pupils, competitors and none competitors who all work extremely hard in class and who all including the parents work as one to support and encourage all”.

RED NOSE BREAK IN

Thieves broke into St Laurence Pre-School, in the Library grounds on Broad Street, and stole money raised for Comic Relief. The break in took place overnight on Friday, March 18th. After smashing the lock on the gate at the rear of the building(bottom right) the thieves worked their way along the windows eventually gaining entry via the kitchen. Three other windows were damaged. Once inside the building they forced the office door and stole collection tins containing £46. Manager Victoria Garavan said: “We don’t normally keep money on site but on this occasion we had the red nose money that had been raised during the day. The children were very upset.”

The school has been targeted at least ten times over the last couple of years the previous occasion being just after Christmas. Co-owner Cheryl Hughes said: “We get hounded by youths most weekends. Something needs to be done, it is beyond a joke.

MAN RISKS LIFE ON CROSSING

On March 23rd British Transport Police released footage of a man risking his life running through a level crossing – seconds before a fast travelling train passes through missing him by inches. This dramatic footage was taken in the early hours of Sunday, 13th March, at the crossing on Station Street, Long Eaton.

The man is caught on camera running across the line as the crossing barriers come down. While his friends wait on the other side, the man runs back across to meet them, only seconds before a fast travelling train passes.

Sergeant Rob Bowley said: “ The man has not only crossed the line whilst barriers were coming down, but he also jumped back across narrowly missing being hit by the train. The crossing has a bridge which runs over the track, allowing pedestrians to safely cross the track whilst the barriers are down. This is not only hugely dangerous and irresponsible, but it could have had fatal consequences."

Richard Pedley, community safety manager for Network Rail, added: “A few centimetres difference and this could be an entirely different story. Re entering a crossing once the barriers are down is extremely reckless. The train driver involved must have had an awful shock and the pedestrian was lucky to escape with his life.

“I hope these pictures help to remind people that crossing barriers and warning lights are there to protect your safety, and to use crossings properly.”

Hi, I suspect this will be one of the strangest questions you have been asked about Long Eaton, but here goes...

As part of a private, non-commercial project I'm researching the history of an organisation called the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association (MDFCTA). This charity was responsible for erecting drinking fountains and cattle/horse troughs in London and across the rest of the UK and Ireland between 1880-1930 (approx). As part of this project I'm trying to track down all the cattle/horse troughs that remain today.

10 such cattle troughs were erected in Derbyshire, one of them in Long Eaton in 1928 on "The Green" which I read as the corner of Derby and Nottingham Roads.

Have you any records of this granite trough? Have you, or any local residents, any knowledge of its current whereabouts? Many thanks in advance for any information you can provide me with.

PEOPLES CHAMPION IN HOSPITAL

Councillor Bill Camm has been admitted to hospital after having a stroke. His condition has been descrided as quite ill. Bill was first elected as councillor for the Sawley Ward in 1961. In his early days on the Long Eaton Urban District Council he was a member of the Labour Party but after falling out with them has been an Independent for most of his political career.

When Long Eaton UDC merged with Erewash Borough Council he retained his seat as an Independent . He is the longest-serving member of that authority and was elected as Sawley's councillor on the Derbyshire County Council in 1970. Bill is associated with a number of organisations including the Sawley Community Association, of which he is president. He is also president of the Sawley & Long Eaton Park Cricket Club, who named their club headquarters, the Bill Camm Pavilion, after him. He is also involved with Long Eaton’s Trident Swimming Club and Long Eaton Cycling Club. Councillor Howard Griffiths, leader of the Erewash Labour Group, said:

“Bill has always been a champion of the people and is a much respected colleague. A former Erewash Mayor and Member of the old Long Eaton Urban District Council, Bill is a credit to himself and to the area. He puts his arguments firmly and squarely and he pulls no punches but always fights fairly. Battling Bill is pugnacious in debate and modest in demeanour. Always sticking up for others and giving his time selflessly. I have been hoping we could get him to accept the "Freedom of the Borough" if Labour won control of the Borough, an honour he much deserves and is long overdue. COOP ROBBER JAILED

A 41-year-old man who robbed a Co-op store in Long Eaton last summer was jailed at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 11th March. Modou Ndow, of Westwood Road, Sneinton, Nottingham, was sentenced to 21 years in connection with the eight robberies, which took place at co-operative stores in Sneinton, Radford, Carlton, Sherwood, Lowdham, Carrington and Long Eaton between November 2009 and June 2010.

He was arrested by detectives from Nottinghamshire Police last June following the robbery at the co-op on College Street Long Eaton, and was subsequently charged with the offences. In the first five robberies, Ndow threatened staff with a knife before stealing cash, but was carrying a handgun during the robbery at Long Eaton. .

FULL STEAM AHEAD

An enthusiastic crowd gathered at Meadow Lane last Saturday (March 12th) to see ex BR steam locomotive 70013 Oliver Cromwell. In December 2008, the prestigious 'John Coiley' award for locomotive preservation was awarded for the restoration of the engine by the Heritage Railway Association. It was the engines first main line trip of the year after spending the winter on the Great Central Railway at Loughborough. She passed through meadow lane crossing at approximately 14:30 after the train had been refurbished at Loughborough. There was a class 37 at the rear. NEW PLANS FOR TOWNS OLDEST PUB The oldest Public House in Long Eaton is to be turned into a restaurant a shop and flats. Erewash Borough Council have received the following planning application. Conversion of public house to restaurant and creation of retail unit to ground floor. Conversion of first and second floor to 3x self contained flats, erection of a single storey extension and 2m high fencing to rear at The Top House 45 Market Place Long Eaton.

The Top House was built on the west side of the Market Place that was once occupied by a row of cottages destroyed in the late 17th century.

On Friday May 12th 1693, a great fire devastated the centre of Long Eaton. In less than two hours 14 houses burned down along with many outbuildings, barns and their contents. There is no record of what arrangements were in place for such an event. There was not a fire engine in the town until 1855. If the Old Bell ceases to be a public house the mantle of oldest pub in the town would pass on to either The New Inn or The Blue Bell both were built around 1790.

Latest development in the bus war in Long Eaton is that TrentBarton through their offshoot Midland General have decided to wipe out Gill's no.8 bus service. Their no. 4 now travels in front of it from Monday 28th February.

As predicted, following the demise of Premiere's Red 4, it no longer serves Briar Gate, which pretty much goes to show these services are only there for as long as it takes to eliminate the competition- do you really want big bus companies to dictate the nature and pattern of the bus service? It is up to you to make a choice. You know the consequences.

OLD KEYS WANTED Erewash Borough Council has provided charity collection points at all its main buildings as part of the ‘Keys for the Homeless’ project. It means local residents can now donate any old and worthless keys they have to help raise cash for the project run by Erewash-based Canaan Trust – an independent charity which offers 24-hour support for homeless people in the borough. Collection bins are now in place at: Long Eaton Town Hall reception, Sandiacre Friesland Sports Centre and West Park Leisure Centre. Councillor Carol Hart, Erewash Borough Councils Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Community Engagement, says: "We all have old keys lying around in drawers at home and often we can’t even remember what they were even used for. Well, old keys have a scrap metal value – so what better way to raise money to help the homeless in our borough than by donating these old keys?”

FREE BASKETBALL SESSIONS Free weekly basketball sessions for anyone aged 16 and over are running at Long Eatons West Park Leisure Centre until the end of March. The one-hour taster sessions are held every Friday between 5pm-6pm thanks to a link-up between Erewash Borough council and the Trailblazers Basketball Club. The free sessions started at the beginning of this month, but anyone interested can still go along and take part. This includes high standards of customer service, excellent record keeping, health and safety and the ability of lifeguards and operators to deal with almost any emergency that may arise in a pool area. SMALL GRANT FUNDING DEADLINE Charities, voluntary organisations and community groups in Erewash have until the end of March to apply for funding from Erewash Borough Council’s Small Grants Fund.

The Council wants to make sure all groups who may be eligible for a grant are aware of the fund to help them continue their community work.

The Fund aims to offer small grants up to a maximum of £2,000 towards specific projects or to help organisations continue their good work in Erewash. Many groups and organisations have already applied to be considered for a grant for 2011/12 but with the 31st March deadline approaching, the Council wants to send out a final reminder to all eligible groups to submit their applications. Councillor Carol Hart, Erewash Borough Council's Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Community Engagement, says: "In previous years, money has helped groups buy much-needed equipment, fund training or support and helped provide outings for people with disabilities or respite for carers. A small amount of money can make a big difference sometimes. We consider all applications and so we want to make sure that all those groups and organisations that play such an important role in our community are aware that they may be eligible for a small grant – and may be successful in their application." BODY IN CANAL A body found in the Erewash Canal at Trent Lock on Sunday February 6th has been identified as Sharon Beckerson, 49, of Goodwood Drive, Alvaston. Mrs Beckerson, who had not been seen since Friday January 7th, had been suffering from depression. Her body was discovered at 3pm by three young girls who were feeding the ducks. They alerted a passing dog walker who called the police. Her husband, Geoff, who works at Rolls Royce, was the last person to see her when he left for work at 7.30am. A team of detectives had searched the River Derwent and retraced the bus journey she made on the day she disappeared. One of the team, DC Tony Owen said: "I would like to thank everyone who helped us with our inquiry. We received many phone calls during the four weeks since Sharon disappeared from people offering information or reporting sightings." Dental records were used to identified the body. The inquest was adjourned pending further enquiries.

SMOKER FINED Another Long Eaton resident has found that smoking can damage your wealth. Shamsher Sahota, 46, was spotted dropping a cigarette end by an Erewash Borough Council warden near Aldi on Cross Street, Long Eaton. He was given a £75 fixed penalty ticket for the offence on September 10th but failed to pay. Mr Sahota, of Chesterfield Road, Long Eaton, failed to attend the hearing and was found guilty in his absence. Ilkeston Magistrates fined him £100, with £150 costs and a £15 Government surcharge.

NEW STORE A new Sainsbury's store is to be built on the former petrol station site on the corner of Cedar Avenue and Tamworth Road. They will be able to sell alcohol every day from 7am until 11pm after their application was approved at a meeting of the council's licensing and protection panel .They originally asked for the option to sell until midnight. Six local residents wrote to Erewash Borough Council to object to the plans.

LONG EATON FIRES Firemen were called to a blaze in a skip on Acton Road, Long Eaton, at 5.30am on Friday February 4th. The cause is not known. No one was hurt. There were a further two fires on Monday February 7th. The first was at Thirlmere Road, at 3.40pm when a fire started in the kitchen after a pan was left unattended. The second occurred when a fire started in an extractor fan at a house in Wilsthorpe Road at around at 8.40pm.

TREETOPS FUND RAISER

A fund raising event in memory of Sean Large RIP was held at Brennans on Regent Street on January 22nd. The charity evening which included music, raffle and an auction raised £1570 for Treetops Hospice and the Nottingham Cardiac Group. The event was organised by Richard and Hazel, Michael and Donna Large and Jim and Anne Brennan. They would like to thank all those who donated cash and prizes for the raffle and auction, everyone who helped on the night and all the people who attended and made the event such a huge success.

Museum’s free medieval fun day

Erewash Museum will celebrate the opening of its new archaeology gallery on Saturday 12th February with a day of medieval fun and games for all the family.

The new gallery offers the chance to view previously unseen artefacts, including a medieval posy ring, from the Museum’s collection, finds from an excavation carried out in Ockbrook and items like a Roman Hoard Pot on loan from Derby Museum.

Entertainment on offer to celebrate the opening will include a medieval jester and face painting, while refreshments will also be available in the Hayloft. The free event takes place between 11am and 3pm.

Visitors will also have the chance to see the Museum’s current exhibition of 3D dinosaur sculptures, which is proving a great hit with adults and children alike.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:

“We are proud to announce the launch of our new archaeology gallery at the Museum and we know the celebration event will be popular with people of all ages. ATTEMPTED BANK ROBBERY Between 5pm - 5.45pm last night (Monday Jan 31) two men smashed their way into Santander on High Street Long Eaton and attempted to steal cash. The men, wearing balaclavas and dark clothing, broke in through the front door and then used hammers to damage the ATM. They stole a box, which is believed to be empty, and then ran off and jumped into a Subaru estate car being driven by a third man. The car drove off along Tamworth Road towards Sawley.

No-one was hurt during the incident although bank staff and a security were on the premises at the time of the incident.

WEST PARK FLASHER

Police have released an image of a suspect who indecently exposed himself to a woman in West Park, Long Eaton. The incident happened at about 4.45pm on Saturday January 15 when a 31-year-old woman was walking along the canal tow path in the park near the Broad Street entrance. She turned around when she heard a whistle and saw a man naked from the waist down. She describes the man as being between 30 – 50 years old and about five feet six inches tall, of average build, with sunken eyes and thin lips. He looked scruffy and was wearing a dark woollen hat, a red and black checked lumberjack style shirt with a T shirt underneath. LONG EATON WOMAN DIES IN FIRE

A Long Eaton Woman died after a fire at her home in Wellington Street on Friday morning, January 14th. Next door neighbour Richard Golder, 41, alerted the fire service after smelling burning at 7.40am. The first appliance arrived within five minutes followed by crews from five other stations. Firemen were hampered by the amount of rubbish in and around the house. The alleyway leading to the back garden was blocked from floor to ceiling.

By dinner time Skips and lorries were brought in to clear rubbish and help gain access. At tea time a spokeswoman for Derbyshire Fire Service said:"We have completed a search of the house as far as is feasible. The fire burned through the joists and the first floor fell into the ground floor. One person remains unaccounted for."

On Friday evening, after 14 hours, firefighters handed the search over to police who continued to struggle because of the damage to the building. Police finally discovered the body at 11am on Monday January 17th more than three days after the fire started.

Neighbour Richard Golder said: “We have complained to the Council many times over the last ten years about the rubbish being a hazard but they told us that it was her house and she could do what she wanted. They said that the rubbish on the garden was not a public nuisance as there was a six foot fence and that it was a civil matter. A fire like this is what we've feared.”

The ajoining houses suffered smoke and water damage and had to be evacuated. Mr Golder and his family were moved to the Risley Hall Hotel and are waiting to meet insurance assessors. The occupant of the house Linda Parkes who is in her late 50s was described by neighbours as a “recluse.” A police spokeswoman said: "The body has not yet been identified and the coroner has been informed. "

ILLEGALS ARRESTED Four illegal immigrants were arrested during a raid on the Europa Hotel, on Derby Road, Long Eaton. The raid was carried out by the UK Border Agency on Wednesday, January 12th, after a tip off. Officers questioned staff at the Oriental Inn, on the ground floor of the hotel. Two Malaysians who had overstayed their visas were arrested along with a Chinese man working in the restaurant's kitchen and a third Malaysian who was found in a hotel bedroom. The restaurant is facing a fine of up to £30,000. The four immigrants arrested were put in detention pending deportation.

SLOW DRIVER IN COURT A Long Eaton driver who was pulled over by police for driving too slowly was found to be a learner with no insurance. Susan Buttler,43, of Hey Street, Long Eaton appeared at Ilkeston Magistrates Court where she was fined £148 with £35 prosecution costs and a £15 Government surcharge. She also had six penalty points put on her licence.

MORE TIME Erewash Borough Council planning committee have given developers another year to build 24 apartments on the site of the former Long Eaton Advertiser building in West Gate.

INQUEST OPENED An inquest has opened into the death of the dog walker found in the Erewash Canal on December 31st. Derby and South Derbyshire Coroners Court heard that Mr Sam McKane, 42, of Thorpe Leys, Long Eaton, had been drinking with friends before taking his dog for a walk at 1.30am. His family went to look for him the following morning when they realized he was missing. They found him in the canal near Wyvern Marina at 7.30am. His dog was still sitting on the canal bank. The court were told that a canal boat owner had heard a bang at around 1.30am that sounded like something had broken the ice. The inquest was adjourned.

DOG WALKERS BODY FOUND IN CANAL

Police were called to the Erewash Canal near Fields Farm Road, Long Eaton, at 7.20 on Friday morning December 31st, after reports of a body in the water. It is believed the man fell through the ice while taking his dog for a walk.

42 year old Sam McKane who had not been seen since setting out with his dog at 11.30pm on Thursday evening was found by his family, who went out searching when he failed to return. His dog was sitting on the canal bank when the discovery was made.

Detective Inspector Mark Argyle, said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

The tragic accident occurred near the entrance to Wyvern Marina and flowers have been left on the bank near the scene.

In the last month with temperatures plummeting to -7% the canal had been completely frozen over and children have regularly been playing on it, but with the recent rise in temperatures it has began to thaw.

Nikki Fretwell who regularly walks her dog Sam along the towpath said:

“It is a popular route for dog walkers and a lot of people from the Fields Farm Estate use it. Everyone is friendly and know each other and each others dogs. What has happened is a tragedy.

The Club is situated on Bank Street (next to the Focus DIY Store). The Grand opening ceremony will begin at 10.30am on Saturday 15th January with a ribbon cutting and a short speech from local Councillor Keri Andrews. Guests will then be invited into the Center to take a look around and to partake in a celebratory toast to mark the occasion.

The purpose of the club is to allow local people to learn about good nutrition and also to help us to help the local community to become generally healthier. I am sure that you are aware, there is a growing health problem in this country which is primarily caused by poor nutrition which seems strange in a country that is so abundant in its resources!!

What is a Nutrition Club?

It’s a location where people from the community are invited to visit and learn about Health and Wellness through the initial serving of 3 of our healthy products, these being Aloe, Energising Tea and a Nutritious Smoothie.

The Club provides for its Members a safe haven; a place for them to go have fun, relax, make new friends and receive positive reassurance .The members will also have the opportunity to receive a free Wellness Evaluation which willl enable them to start to make some small lifestyle changes to help them to become fitter and healthier. Additionally there is an opportunity for the members to take advantage of being able to receive a full body scan which, amongst other things will reveal their body fat percentage, their muscle mass, their level of hydration and their metabolic age. RAM RAIDER JAILED A 23-year-old man has been jailed after carrying out a robbery on a Long Eaton convenience store. Damon Cadle walked into Ram Stores on Derby Road, Long Eaton at 9:40pm on August 21st and threatened the shop assistant claiming he had a knife. He then forced the assistant to open the till and he snatched a small amount of cash before running off. CCTV seized from the shop showed the offender in a hooded top which briefly slipped back and officers were able to identify Cadle, of Wallis Close, Draycott as the robber. He was arrested by officers two days later and charged with robbery. He pleaded guilty to the offence at Derby Crown Court on November 26th. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the robbery and a further 12 months for breaching a suspended sentence order. BUS WAR OVER AS PREMIER SURRENDERS Premier Travel have announced that it is to withdraw its Red4 service which runs between Long Eaton and Nottingham via Petersham and Sandiacre. The service began on November 14th in competition with Trent Bartons Rainbow 4. They charge £2 which is slightly less than the Rainbow service. At the end of November Midland General part of the group who own Trent Barton started a service on the same route charging only 50p. Premiere managing director Steve Greaves said: "They have run us off the road." After Premier Travel announced its withdraw Midland General immediately put their price up to £1. Premiere will continue operating Red 4 until January 22nd. MAN FOUND HANGING An inquest at South Derbyshire Coroners Court heard that a Long Eaton man was found hanging at his home in Bohem Road. The man, Mark Pettitt, aged 54, was found after police forced their way in to the house shortly after 10am on Tuesday December 7th. Mr Pettitt’s sister had contacted police after becoming worried about him. He was pronounced dead at the Royal Derby Hospital. The inquest was adjourned while police carry out further inquiries. .

CRIME SCENE CHARITY SHOP THEFT A teenager has been charged with shoplifting after police officers investigated reports of Eastern European women selling jewellery in Long Eaton town centre. Officers received several calls from shoppers and Erewash Borough Council wardens reporting two suspicious women in the area. They stopped and arrested a woman and a teenager, who live in Handsworth, Birmingham, on suspicion of shoplifting after one was found with a top allegedly stolen from charity shop Headway, in the High Street. The 16-year-old was later charged while the 23-year-old was released without charge. PRESENTS TAKEN Christmas gifts were among items stolen from a house in Bosworth Way, Long Eaton. A lap top and TV were also taken after burglars forced their way into a conservatory. The thefts were discovered after the owners returned home at 6pm on Tuesday December 14th. Providing the new facility and the message that fly-tipping is not acceptable . . . Erewash Borough Council launches its new ‘fleet’ of mixed recycling banks at the Long Eaton Asda store. Erewash Borough Council has launched another successful recycling initiative as its drive to remain a top-performing greenchampion continues. The Councils refuse and recycling team is celebrating a winning link-up with Long Eaton's Asda supermarket to crackdown and wipe-out a major problem with fly-tipping at the town centre site. The supermarket contacted the Council for help in dealing with the on-going battle with litter and rubbish being dumped alongside waste and recycling banks in the car park. Now 20 new blue, multi-purpose mixed recycling banks have been installed at the site, meaning residents and shoppers can take their waste paper, cardboard, plastics, tins and glass and put them into one ‘bank’ – without the need to separate them all out. And the Council will be adding another 5 banks on the 17th December for the busy Christmas and New Year period to ensure there is plenty of available recycling space. The Council’s waste recycling vehicles are emptying the banks every Monday and Friday, with the team regularly reviewing the system to ensure it is meeting demand. The Council has also installed 20 of the all-in-one blue recycling banks at West Park Leisure Centre car park in Long Eaton – and by 17th December the number of banks will increase to 35 when the former black bins are re-installed as blue, mixed recycling banks following cleaning and refurbishment.

“We are confident residents will welcome this news, which shows our commitment to providing more opportunities for people to dispose of their recyclable waste. MARKET TO OPEN DAILY

Long Eaton market will be open for business every day on the busy run-up to Christmas . . . giving residents the chance for some great festive shopping.

The market will run daily from Monday 20th December through to Christmas Eve, with Tuesday 21st December being the popular Flea Market. SANTA VISITS MUSEUM Santa is taking time out from his busy schedule to visit children at Erewash Museum on Saturday 18th December as part of the popular Christmas Fair event between 11am and 3pm.

The seasonal family day will include craft stalls selling a whole range of handmade goods - including cards, jewellery, toys and food and will be a great opportunity to purchase those last minute Christmas gifts. And adding to the festive feel will be mince pies, hot drinks and other tasty refreshments on offer in the Hayloft, all served by the Friends of the Erewash Museum. The event is free, but there will be a small charge to see Santa.

FUNDS NEEDED FOR ANTONY

A Stapleford man is seriously ill in a Thailand hospital following a road accident. Antony Giles,22, was a passenger on his friend's moped when it collided with a car in Thailand. The crash occured on Thursday evening November 25th and Antony suffered two broken legs, one broken arm, and severe chest injuries. His parents, Allan and Debbie Giles, flew to Thailand on Friday morning to be with him.

The cost of treatment so far has exceeded £20,000 and is approximately £1,000 per day, plus any treatment, scans, X-rays and medication.

The family urgently need funds to help pay the medical bills and they are struggling to do this even with the support of their friends and families.

.CHESTNUT FAIR

Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Robert Parkinson opened the 11th Chestnut Fair on Waverley Street on Thursday at 6pm. The rain, which had been threatening all day, started to fall minutes before the ribbon was cut and the fair officially declared open. After the short damp ceremony the Mayor and deputy Mayor headed for shelter, a spin on the dodgem cars. The fair runs until Saturday when it opens from 1pm - 11pm.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, said:

“The Chestnut Fair has developed into a wonderful, family tradition and I know that people of all ages look forward to mid-November and to welcoming this three-day fair to Long Eaton.”

The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Robert Parkinson joined local residents and civic guests at this year’s Remembrance Services in Long Eaton today. The service was held at St Laurence’s Church in the town at 10.45am following the traditional march to the Cenotaph and was also attended by the Deputy Lieutenant for Derbyshire, Sir Henry Every (Bt).

“I was very proud, as always, to be a part of the civic Remembrance Services to honour the men and women who have given their lives in the service of their country.”

.INQUEST VERDICT - NATURAL CAUSES An inquest into the death of Long Eaton mum Julie Welsh has returned a verdict of natural causes. Julie, 28, died on April 6th after suffering a rare allergic reaction to fluid from her womb after giving birth. The tragedy occurred at Royal Derby General Hospital shortly after holding and kissing her newborn son Isaac.

The inquest was told that the condition, called amniotic fluid embolism, affects only 18 women in a million and kills up to 80 per cent of them. Recording a verdict of natural causes, Derby and South Derbyshire Coroner, Dr Robert Hunter said:- “The deadly condition resulted from the natural process of childbirth. Unfortunately, it can not be predicted, there are no tests or factors that can be assessed. Furthermore, there's no specific treatment that can be offered and therefore it's not preventable."

Miss Welsh who lived with her fiancé, Peter Brown in Maxwell Street, Long Eaton, was a former judo champion. The couple planned to marry next year.

CINEMA SET TO RE-OPEN The Galaxy Cinema closed in mid September for refurbishment and essential maintenance. Part of the refurb has been to knock two of the three screens into one. So when it reopens on Friday November 19th it will have one small and one large screen. By then it will have a new name, The Long Eaton Cinema. The first film on the new large screen will be Harry Potter 7 part 1.

TRICK OR TREAT On Sunday evening October 31st a woman answered the door to find two men in dark clothes and wearing Halloween masks. After shouting trick or treat they pushed her aside and ran into the house where they assaulted her husband. After being knocked to the floor he was kicked in the head and body before the two men ran off. The incident occurred on College Street at 7pm. Nothing was stolen. The injured man, who sustained cracked ribs, was taken to QMC where he was kept overnight for observation.

MINI TAKEN Thieves who broke into a Long Eaton house made off in a Mini Cooper after finding the keys inside the property. The house in Hamilton Road was broken into between 7.30pm Monday November 1st and 12.30am Tuesday. The intruders, who got in through a side door, helped themselves to a Nintendo DS, Tom Tom Sat Nav, a digital camera and a printer.
